TOUR DESCRIPTION

The tour starts in Richards Bay and travels north along the coast to the iSimangaliso Wetlands Park in northern KwaZulu-Natal. After boarding a riverboat there, you will get a two-hour guided tour of the estuary. You will learn about the history of the reserve and its amazing fauna from the local guide.

In 1999, South Africa's first Natural World Heritage Site was designated as the Isimangaliso Wetlands Park. The UNESCO property was once known as the Greater St. Lucia Wetland Park and is more than 120 years old. With its distinct ecology encompassing over 280 km of nearly pristine coastline and 328 000 hectares of breathtaking landscape, the reserve—which was established in 1895—is regarded as South Africa's third largest park. There are an estimated 1000 crocodiles and one of the largest populations of hippos in South Africa in the protected area. Plant, bird, and animal life abound at Isimangaliso, with species such as fish eagles, lions, zebras, African elephants, leopards, giraffes, and black and southern white rhinos among them.

You will go to the town of St. Lucia for lunch and shopping at the neighborhood street vendors after the boat tour. The tour guide will show you the beach area after lunch and then return to Richards Bay.
